China dominated the wheelchair events, winning five of the seven gold medals contested at the 5th Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International 2023, with Korea and Japan taking one each.
Qu Zimo (China) easily got through his men’s singles WH1 match with a 21-11 21-7 win over teammate Yang Tong.
In the men’s doubles WH1-WH2, Qu and Mai Jianpeng (China) sent veterans Kim Jungjun and Choi Jungman of Korea packing with 21-13 21-17.
“I cannot tell you the secret of my success. I can only reveal that I eat well and sleep a lot. And I train five hours a day,” said Qu, winner of two gold medals in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
“And I will win the two gold in Paris,” he added.
Korea’s one gold came from Choi Jungman and Jung Gyeoul when they defeated Chan Ho Yuen (Hong Kong China) and To Man-Kei (Belgium), 21-18 18-21 21-15 in the mixed doubles WH1-WH2.
“It was a good match. I think there were times when Jung seemed nervous but she did well. Chan and I only started playing doubles together early this year so considering that, we did OK,” said To.
Jung Gyeoul who partnered with Choi for the first time said: “I’m used to playing with Kwon (women’s doubles) but with Choi, it took some adjustment playing with a new partner. Playing against China is always difficult. I have benefitted from this because Choi is very experience and he’s a good teacher,” said Jung.
