Brazilian shuttlers shone the brightest at the Parapan Am Games in Santiago, Chile last week, bagging nine gold for a total of 21 medals after five days of great competition.
Marcelo Conceicao and Rogerio Oliveira contributed two gold each, winning the WH1 men’s singles and WH1-2 men’s doubles and SL4 men’s singles and SL3-SU5 mixed doubles respectively. Conceicao was partnered by Julio Cesar Godoy in the 21-2 21-10 win over compatriots Edmar Francisco Barbosa/Radolfo Renato Cano while Edwarda Oliveira played Rogerio’s sidekick throughout.
Brazil’s other victories came via Yuki Rodrigues (SU5 men’s singles), Daniele Souza (WH1 women’s singles), Abinaecia Silva (SL3 women’s singles), Ana Carolina Reis (SL4 women’s singles) and Mikaela Almeida (SU5 women’s singles).
Apart from Conceicao and Oliveira, world champion Pilar Jauregui of Peru (WH2 women’s singles and WH1-2 women’s doubles alongside Jaquelin Burgos Javier) and American Miles Krajewski (SH6 men’s singles and mixed doubles with Jayci Simon) also took home two titles each.
Local star Jaime Aranguiz won the hosts’ only gold, defeating Godoy 21-15 21-11 in the WH2 men’s singles final.
