India dominated the Uganda Para Badminton International 2023 winning 13 gold medals of the 18 at stake in Kampala.
Wheelchair competitor Alphia James had a standout event, winning the women’s singles WH2, the women’s doubles (with Pallavi Kuluvehalli) and the mixed doubles (with Ryu Donghyun).
Incidentally, Ryu also won a triple, capturing the WH1 men’s singles title over Italy’s Yuri Ferrigno and the men’s doubles (WH1-WH2) with singles legend and WH2 winner Kim Jungjun.
It was back to winning ways for Kim in the singles. The Korean, having lost two singles finals earlier this year, took home his first gold of the season beating Sanjeev Kumar 21-15 21-13.
Highlights
Thulasimathi Murugesan captured the SU5 women’s singles gold beating compatriot Latika Latika 21-7 21-11. Another well-known name, Palak Kohli, too won gold with ease, in the SL4 women’s singles over local hope Harriet Nakayima.
Africa’s sole gold medal came through Mariam Eniola Bolaji in SL3 women’s singles. The Nigerian beat India’s Sanjana Kumari 21-9 21-11.
Players to win a double included Chandra Prakash (SL3), Naveen Sivakumar, Murugesan, Pallavi Kuluvehalli and Kim.
Spain’s Ivan Segura Escobar won the SH6 singles over Iran’s Arefeh Zahra Asadi Poor.
