Defending champion Giuliana Poveda Flores of Peru handed 10-time world champion Rachel Choong of England a 21-15 21-6 defeat in a rematch of the 2019 women’s singles SH6 final on Friday.

The standing quarterfinals produced a number of tense contests, including an upset win by England’s Krysten Coombs over Paralympic champion Krishna Nagar of India 15-21 23-21 21-19.

Coombs, the Paralympic bronze medallist from last year, held his nerve in a game that lasted nearly 50 minutes.

“These last few months since Thailand, I’ve just pushed myself and got myself in such a great position this week,” Coombs said.

Compatriot Jack Shephard was made to work hard by India’s Sivarajan Solaimalai, eventually winning 21-19 19-21 21-19 in 56 minutes.

Three out of four semifinal placing were taken up by Indians in the men’s standing SL3 category, with defending and Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat moving past Ukraine’s Oleksandr Chyrkov 21-16 21-14.

Bhagat also moved into the semis of the men’s doubles SL3-SL4 with fellow singles semifinalist Manoj Sarkar.

Ukraine’s other player on show, women’s singles SL3 star Oksana Kozyna, caused another upset by defeating India’s Mandeep Kaur.

Cheah Leak Hou of Malaysia, the top seed in the men’s singles standing SU5, was made to work for his quarterfinal win emerging a 21-15 20-22 21-13 victor. Defending world champion Dheva Anrimusti also entered the last four thanks to a three-game win over Chinese Taipei’s Fang Jen-Yu.

“I lost a bit of focus in the second game,” Leak Hou said.

“I thought I was leading by so much. I got busy looking at my next court where my potential opponents were playing.

“What should have been an easy two-game match became longer, which should be a lesson for me.”
