BWF is actively seeking solutions to restart the Para badminton circuit as early as possible.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all sporting events, and led to the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and several Para badminton international tournaments and continental championships.
The challenges thrown up by the pandemic are likely to persist into 2021, which will necessitate a change in BWF’s originally planned schedule of postponed tournaments. It has also meant a postponement of the start of the new Para Badminton World Circuit until at least 2022.
“BWF is not yet able to confirm what next year will look like, but would like to assure all stakeholders – particularly the community of Para badminton players – that we are looking at opportunities for players to compete again,” said BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund.
Among the tournaments being considered are the last qualification tournament for the Tokyo Paralympic Games, and other world ranking tournaments to help players perform at their best at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2021.
The Para Badminton World Rankings have been frozen. A plan to unfreeze the rankings will be communicated once there is a better understanding of the tournament calendar in 2021 and beyond.
