Adrian Dziolko scored his first win over Kevin Cordon in three matches, in the final session of play on the opening day in Men’s Singles Group P.
Guatemala’s Cordon, who beat Poland’s Dziolko (featured image) in straight games at the Yonex US Open earlier this year, took the opening game but gradually fell apart, with the Pole unleashing some big smashes. Cordon appeared to have trouble with his left knee, which required medical attention. Cordon walked off in tears after the 18-21 21-10 21-13 loss.
In other Men’s Singles action, Ng Ka Long (Hong Kong), Son Wan Ho (Korea) and Rajiv Ouseph (Great Britain) all recorded straight-games victories over Martin Giuffre (Canada), Jacob Maliekal (South Africa) and Petr Koukal (Czech Republic) respectively. Mexico’s Lino Munoz gave the crowd plenty to cheer about as he pushed Srikanth Kidambi in the second game. The Indian had sufficient fuel to close it out in straight games, 21-11 21-17.
Australia’s Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen put up a plucky show against No.12 seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk (Thailand) in Women’s Singles. The Australian traded blow for blow, giving the Thai much to worry about in both games, with Buranaprasertsuk pulling through in the late stages, 21-14 21-15.
“I got so many chances but I didn’t convert them,” Chen said. “I expected more of myself. I think I can do much better. Obviously the lack of experience showed. I would like start playing at the Superseries level.”
USA’s Iris Wang was taken the distance by Belgium’s Lianne Tan, who edged past her in a close second game but Wang proved to be superior in the end: 21-17 20-22 21-14.
“I’m pretty satisfied,” said Wang. “I was a little nervous when I got on court, I built it up in my head and had to calm myself down. I’m surprised I got so much support. My parents and sis are here and I’m thrilled about that.”
Great Britain’s Kirsty Gilmour was too strong for Switzerland’s Sabrina Jacquet in a 21-17 21-15 result.
In Women’s Doubles, Korea’s Shin Seung Chan/Jung Kyung Eun powered past USA’s Eva Lee/Paula Lynn Obanana 21-14 21-12.
