Australian Men’s Doubles duo, Matthew Chau/Sawan Serasinghe, and their Mixed Doubles compatriots, Robin Middleton/Leanne Choo (featured image), are Rio-bound.
The two pairs were selected by Australia’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) under the Continental Representation quota for the Rio Olympics.
Australia had four eligible representatives at the end of the first phase of qualification (31 May 2016), but by regulation could only choose a maximum of two. The four categories were: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. As there were no Tripartite places taken up in Women’s Singles, the highest Oceania representative (No.74 Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen) qualified on ranking.
Of the other three categories, the Australian NOC accepted the invitations for Men’s Doubles (No.46 Matthew Chau/Sawan Serasinghe) and Mixed Doubles (No.34 Robin Middleton/Leanne Choo), declining the invitation for Men’s Singles (No.134 Ashwant Gobinathan). BWF has reallocated the invitation to the next highest ranked player from Oceania under the Continental Representation system – No.254 Dylan Soedjasa of New Zealand. The respective NOC (New Zealand) will have to confirm acceptance of the invitation to BWF by 20 June 2016.
All other invitations made in the first phase of qualifying were accepted by respective NOCs.
